Cleaning and Storing the Archive
We advertised on the Do It volunteering site at Salford CVS for Archive and Photographic volunteering roles. We really didn’t know how much interest we would have in the work, and we were totally delighted to have a huge response to the advert. We now have a regular group of volunteers who work with our team on Mondays and Tuesdays on the archive.
The work flow is such that the tasks are split; on Mondays we clean the archive and prepare any of the storage materials, including the envelopes and boxes. On Tuesdays we catalogue whats just been cleaned and store it in archival boxes, ready to be dispatched to the Greater Manchester County Records Office at the end of the project.
Claire Hignett works with and supervises the volunteers in a two hour session at our base at Ordsall Community Arts. Its an informal and friendly session which our volunteers really enjoy. There is a lot of material to clean and they have great enthusiasm for it!
