    Cromwell Secondary School

    It had a foreboding reputation

Not like Clarry where I later went

    Even the girls were tough

Sometimes there was a night time youth club dance

The teachers smoked and the females wore scent

    If you couldn’t fight

You got chucked down the hill

    The older lads made sure

    It was some bizarre tradition

I remember the Aztec wall sculpture

There was a huge on going fuss about that

We could have had a swimming pool instead

But for some reason they went and voted for that.

There was some old eccentric overtly gay dude

    Called sexy Sykes

He fondled and touched up pupils

He was like Quinton Crisp on a pushbike

He got all touchy feely with the kids

He treated it as a joke,, if you tried to get passed him

He was an art teacher of some kind

This was painful leagues ago in 72

    Pink Floyd and Psychedelic designs

Adorned the walls with gloy glue

It was all very other worldly

We played football on the concrete play ground

I was good then mind you

But once you got taken down

By a mammoth that weighted a tonne

There was no way to continue

An abrasion wide open you’d been done

    Rugby was the same

    Vicious in cold seasons

You just didn’t tackle the cock of the school

    For obvious reasons

The rain and the frost, ground like solid stone

    And the embarrassing sports kit

Like a scene from Loach’s KES milestone

Seemed like a form of subliminal punishment

Was the only reason we were even doing it

On the crazy bus going there

    The weakest kids would fret,,

I remember the intimidating Billy Burns

He was a much older bully and a kind of a mad biker

He used to wave his knob around in the toilets

Proudly bragging with his prize tool

    Just to showing off

    Those are my enduring memories

Of going to Cromwell Secondary School
