About the Buildings and Landscapes Category

These images are largely documentary photographs showing building projects and refurbishments in the area at the time. They suggest that lots of new building was happening then and that businesses wanted records of their newly built establishments, or else needed a photographic record for construction purposes or as a record of an event, eg a street scene showing a road accident.

Road Accident

This is a lovely image as it shows the reactions of the crowd expectantly waiting to see what’s going to happen next, and eager to find out how the accident was caused. We don’t know the date, but we know it was taken in or after 1948, the date when the nationalised recovery fleet, known as British Road Services, was set up. It was later called the National Freight Corporation, before being privatised in the 1980s.

If you have any memories of any places or photographs shown, please send them to us and contribute to our memory book to help us identify the photographs.
This section also contains insurance buildings, houses and photographs for commercial promotion, such as for the Valley House Hotel and the Lancastrian.
