About the Cars and Transport Category

Some of our favourite images in the collection are in this category, as they are so evocative of the times the photographs were taken. As there are images of cars by themselves it indicates they were still a novelty at that time, not every family in the 50s and 60s owned a car or a TV.

Car photographed on cobbled street

This photograph of the car parked across the street is a great example of how novel and special car ownership must have been. Its sleek new chassis must have been a wonderful contrast to the dark brick houses and cobbled street, and the photograph makes you wonder what colour the car was.

If you have any memories of any places or photographs shown, please send them to us and contribute to our memory book to help us identify the photographs.
We’re interested in identifying the make and models of the vehicles for the archive catalogue, so if you recognise any details please add a comment to the photograph.
