About the Fashion Category

Many of the Portraits of the 1950s and 60s show high fashion, so we have separated them out for this category. Some of the images were taken to either promote fashion or to capture a model in the studio, and others may be more informal.

The clothes and accessories in the collection demonstrate a unique look across both decades. The images show a range of patterns and designs that were a clear departure from fashion and design in the 1940s and during the war. Hairstyles suddenly became more elaborate in the 1950s and 60s thanks to the introduction of a new liquid vinyl plastic called hairspray.
