About the Jewish Community Category

Cheetham Hill is a very diverse, multi cultural area made up of many nations and ethnicities, and in the late 19th to mid 20th century, the Jewish community were one of the largest groups to settle there. Today, the district hosts the UK’s 2nd largest Jewish population outside London.

The collection contains many portraits of ancestors of families who moved to Cheetham Hill after the Second World War. The area attracted skilled workers from the Jewish community across Europe, particularly from the textile industry, eventually creating many clothing and manufacturing businesses in the area.

If you have any memories of any places or photographs shown, please send them to us and contribute to our memory book to help us identify the photographs.

Many of these businesses led to a successful commercial and shopping district, and Cheetham Hill Road is still a lively, vibrant shopping destination for many local people.
