About the Portraits of the 1950s and 60s Category

A large section of the archive is studio portraits taken in the 1950s and 60s. Many of them were taken on 35mm film, wheras the Assorted Portraits were mostly taken on glass plates negatives.

As such they are the clearest images in the collection, being the most recent and being developed from film. Until the negatives were cleaned and digitised, we were unsure of how well they would print because of their age.

If you have any memories of any places or photographs shown, please send them to us and contribute to our memory book to help us identify the photographs.

There is a very wide range of sitters here, many family photographs and baby portraits as well as couples and individuals. These images are one of the features of our summer exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery.
