About the Shops Category

One of our favourite categories is the collection of shops, many from Cheetham Hill High Street, which was a busy shopping centre for people from both Salford and Cheetham Hill at the time.

This photograph shows a group women in headscarves queuing outside the Home Supplies shop in Great Cheetham Street. Another image in the collection shows the inside of the shop during a special promotional event, which probably explains the queue.

There are also charming traditional shop fronts, as well as promotional features for new products like Vim, and the inside of Woolworths at the beginning of the self-service era.

We have organized a Family Heritage Trail as part of Manchester Histories Festival which features lots of the shops on Cheetham Hill Road.
